  • How to give a product review.

    Heydy Hidy Hody happy

    It's been awhile since I've been on, but here I am. Anyway, updates on my life another time.

    Today, I wanted to give some guidelines to giving good product reviews if ever you feel compelled to leave behind some informative thoughts on a purchased/received product of some sort.

    My compulsion to do this resulted from trying to sort through possible laptop choices as my current one is just becoming obsolete for today's standards (6 yrs old).  It's also a bit of a rant since people who had trouble with the product didn't elaborate, thus I don't know what to look out for.

    So let's get started!

    1) Stick to the product!

    - I went looking around on Amazon.com and many times, there will be negative reviews NOT on the product, but on the seller!  There's a place for that, and on Amazon, you usually click on the seller's name/company and can give a review there.

    - Many times, a product was given very low ratings by users who never received the product.  It might not seem much, but just for you people to understand, a low rating on the product says that the product sucks.  It doesn't say anything about the seller.  And there are many, many people who base their choices on ratings.

    - If you must, give a true rating of the product, and then give a heads-up of what they can expect from the seller.  That way, others considering the product will know that the product is good, they'll just have to find a better seller to complete the deal.

    2) Give a mini profile about yourself!

    - You know just as well as I do that how we intend to use our product determines what we think of the product.

    - A full-time serious photographer looking for a camera that will provide the most options and control of the ISO and Aperture will obviously not find what he's looking for in a simple point-and-shoot cam.  A person looking for a powerful and fast car won't find a 4-cylinder engine the best car to use.  And if you were looking for a very good gaming/multimedia computer, you'll definitely give a mediocre review at the most for a tiny netbook.

    - Give some idea of who you are relative to the product you're reviewing: "I'm a serious photographer looking for so and so..."  "I work in a fast-paced tech firm and needed a fast, powerful laptop to..."

    3) Elaborate your pros and cons a bit

    - Saying the picture quality was bad doesn't tell us much except that it was bad for you.  It helps to explain what you were looking for.  Maybe for you it was bad, but for other consumers, it's okay.

    These are the three main points that would help other consumers make a better choice.  Of course, these are just general guidelines.  If you're not going to be as helpful, it may be best to just save yourself the time and refrain from giving a review unless asked for it.

    Remember, if something sucks or is great but you don't explain why, your reviews and opinion won't be taken seriously.  If people (who are not your boss or don't have any power over you) told you what to do without reason, would you do it?  If their reason isn't clear, would you trust them?  "This product sucks, don't get it" wouldn't tell me anything except that you had trouble with it.

    Well, that ends my guideline/rant on product reviews.  Another update will come up in a few days.

  • Latest Wing Chun Movie (released 2010)

    I just saw a Wing Chun movie cleverly titled "Kung Fu Wing Chun" >_>. Anyway, it's more of a romance action comedy rather than a serious-toned genre like Ip Man and Ip Man 2.  It's not 100% pure Wing Chun due to some wire-fu moves.  If anything, this movie was more of a remake of 1994's Wing Chun, starring Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen, only it also has an extended story in which it delves into the past life of the Nun Ng Mui, as well as the current timeline's Shaolin hunt.

    The movie feels nostalgic to the times when Once Upon A Time in China and Fong Sai Yuk movies were made (Both movie series starring Jet Li).  The fighting style presented in the movie was decently played.  Wing Chun's Wing Chun skills were a bit on the raw side, but as the movie is about the creation of the form, it's a bit expected of Wing Chun since she was no master at that time.  Unlike Michelle Yeoh's film, the Wing Chun in this movie actually performed more attacks and deflections distinctive of the style.

    Unfortunately, the movie dropped in value to me due to the cheap CG used.  Is it so difficult to film a scene where people say goodbye and walk out towards the setting sun?  This movie's also cliched.

    All in all though, it brings some nostalgia.  I haven't seen a film like this in quite some time.

    I would rate it a PG to PG-13 movie, mostly due to the blood, but even by today's standards, it's not much.

    The original language is Mandarin, although I watched it all in Cantonese.

  • Mammalian Physiology Lesson 1

    What is physiology?

    - It is the study of the function of organ systems and how they interact.

    - Physiology focuses on explaining HOW things work/happen, NOT WHY they happen.

    Good physiological explanations focus on the causes of an event (aka Mechanistic explanations).

    -----Example:

    Increasing heart rate is caused by the increase of firing frequency of sympathetic neurons to heart muscle fibers.

    The opening of voltage-gated sodium channels causes a neuron to produce an action potential.

    ----

    Note that the explanations discuss what happened before the event of focus (increase HR, Opening channels).

    We do NOT want teleological explanations (explanations about the consequences of an event)

    -----Example:

    Running -> increased HR -> Oxygen delivery to muscle increases.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    This class focuses on how different parts of the body cooperate to produce a normal function.

    - Rene Descartes explained that reflexes are the mechanisms that controlled the body's well-being.

    - Claude Bernard stated that the internal conditions of an animal body are different from external conditions.

    - Cannon postulates Homeostasis - the complex mechanisms in animals that maintain conditions on the inside of the body in a different state from the external world.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    The most common mechanism for maintaining a variable at a relatively constant value is negative feedback

    A negative feedback system consists of: Controlled variable, sensor, comparing unit that compares sensor output to a set point, and a controller which takes the info from the comparing unit and acts accordingly.

    An analogy with a ship at sea:  The ship slows down (controlled variable).  Navigator(comparing unit) looks at current speed(sensor) and compares to desired speed.  Sends information to the Captain (Controller).  Captain gives orders to increase ship speed until desired speed is met.

    Why is Negative Feedback important???

    It resists change of the controlled variable

    -when the variable is too high, the system reduces it.  Vice versa.

  • Try Before You Buy

    If you ever get the chance, try before you buy.

    I just bought a bottle of cologne today at Target and I really like it. In fact, I would have a hard time deciding between wearing CK's "Eternity for Men", or this new one. The new one's Sean John's "I Am King". My first impression was that it smelled like oranges, as if someone was just peeling it and the powder from the skin was drifting through the air. Nice, but not what I had in mind for a cologne. After a few minutes though, from the same spot I sprayed the tester version of "I Am King", I smell a nice musky wood. I got confused for a bit so I sprayed this tester again on my other arm. Again, an orange scent. After a minute or so, the nice musky wood again. Then I thought, wow that was cool. The smell's good for semi-formal outerwear. But we'll see how well it can apply to occasions.

  • My Poem

    I wrote this poem around 2am this morning. Everything in this poem is one scene. Tell me your interpretations. For a pre-set mood of the poem, try listening to this instrumental: .
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Every time I see your eyes
    There's a clarity that shines
    With the stars in the sky
    And the moon glowing

    A diamond's song drifting around
    Along the void of the air
    Of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds
    With pure Amethyst's heart

    Whispering winds shower willowing petals
    Your hair trailing with the breeze
    A tear that glistens by the moon
    For whom do you cry?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    So here's my interpretation, see if it makes sense.

    Stanza 1: Describes the sparkliness of the person's eyes at night.
    - shiny and clarity can be seen as either purity, determination, or both... however you want to look at it.

    Stanza 2: when you think of high quality diamonds, what do you think? when you imagine a perfect diamond, what do you see? Apply that to the song this person is singing.
    - I used "diamond's song" as a way to present a crystal clear expression of emotion.
    - the general colors of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are red, blue, and green respectively. They symbolize passion, sadness, and jealousy respectively.
    - I also meant to use the meaning of these gems in terms of birthstones symbols. I especially liked personifying the amethyst as a heart. The gemstone is widely known as a symbol of peace and tranquility.

    Stanza 3: Returns to describing the night scene of the wind gently blowing down flower petals from trees, and gently flowing the hair. This person is crying. Why?

  • If I knew your perspective, I wouldn't have done it!

    Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but I get the feeling some people I usually talk to are avoiding me and I don't know why.  I care because these are people I usually talk to at least once a week.  Maybe they're just busy, are in a bad mood, oblivious to me being there.  Maybe I did something wrong and they don't want to talk to me.

    [KEY WORD: UNINTENTIONAL]

    In situations where we did something that upsets the other party unintentionally, we don't know what to do because we don't know what we did wrong.  All of you have been there.  It gets pretty nerve wrecking.  You try to figure out if you hurt someone or not.  You wrack your brains trying to figure out what you did wrong.  Nothing comes to mind except some things you did that could only be possible but aren't a sure thing.

    It sucks when these people give off vibes of avoiding you.  You do one of either two things:
    1) You don't care, drop it and move on (usually with people you don't really know)
    2) You're not sure what to think, but eventually you feel like it was your fault.  Your calls, texts, instant messages go unanswered regardless of the 2nd try.

    Granted, if you constantly try to contact them consecutively over a span of a few minutes (called every hour), then the other party just gets annoyed even further.

    If you're angry at someone and you expect your target to understand on their own why you carry such hatred and wrath for them at that moment, you're only going to burden yourself some more.  Like the title says: <b><i>If I knew your perspective, I wouldn't have done it!</b></i>.  If you don't tell me that I did something wrong, I can only speculate.  Not only that, but I'm not going to see how I wronged you unless you tell me so.  None of us are perfect, and I'm not you, nor are you me.  I don't know what goes through your mind unless you tell me.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Well, that ran through my head many times and I thought I'd get it down.  Hopefully I'll stop thinking about it.

  • 1st Lab Session Rant

    Whoever owned drawer #99 in room 1319 of the Natural Science Building last quarter NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO BE RESPONSIBLE!!

    Half of the total inventory required was missing from the drawer. Half of what WAS in the drawer were excess tools NOT NEEDED, and some even filled with some kind of crystal/solids that could NOT be identified!! And the 9"x12" box used to hold the little things like droppers, stoppers, magnetic stirring rods, pipette bulbs... THERE WAS A CHEMICAL SPILL IN THERE! WHAT THE HELL WAS IT? I HAD TO CHECK SOLUBILITY, PH, AND SAFELY DISPOSE OF THE DAMN MESS!!!!

    Normally, since it became my drawer today, it wouldn't have been a problem on my own time. So here's the problem: WE'RE ALREADY ASSIGNED AN EXPERIMENT AND I HAD TO SPEND 2 OUT OF THE 3 HOURS ALLOTTED JUST CLEANING!!!!

    I had only 1 (ONE) hour to begin and get as far as I could in my experiment.

    Well, now that it's past and also out of my chest, I managed to catch up to most of my other peers at where they're at. Well, actually I"m a few steps behind, but I'm surprised I got there quite quickly. The only thing I'm afraid of right now is that I was careless.

  • Pharmacology/Toxicology Lecture 1

    Today's lecture compared Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics.

    This lecture was kind of random in that there didn't really seem to be any particular order, but I'll try my best to organize it. If something seems out of place or there's confusion, let me know and I'll try to clarify/fix it.

    ===========
    Pharmacology is a very broad topic. Components of each science makes up a branch of pharmacology. Examples include the usual biology, physics, and chemistry.

    The technical definition is: "The unified study of the properties of chemical agents on living organisms and all aspects of their interactions"
    --In short, pharmacology looks at the properties of drugs and how the body responds to the drugs in terms of the biological mechanisms/pathways activated or blocked.

    Pharmacology focuses mostly on 5 principle areas:
    1) Pharmacodynamics
    2) Pharmacokinetics
    3) Pharmacogenetics
    4) Toxicology
    5) N/A as was not discussed in lecture, or I missed it.

    So let's look at Pharmacodynamics
    ===
    Pharmacodynamics:
    ========================
    In pharmacodynamics, we try to understand what the drug does to the system, whether it is in vivo or in vitro. [In vivo just means "internal" as in "within the body". In vitro means "in an artificial environment outside the living organism" like in a glass, test tube, etc. You can google these definitions.] The goal in pharmacodynamics is to understand what the RESPONSE is - what is happening in the system? In this field, you will be looking at the principle molecular interactions that occur between the drug and a molecule that will respond to this drug/stimulus (aka effector molecules: receptors, enzymatic/non-enzymatic proteins).

    Let's look at an example from class:
    1) The focus will be on affecting blood pressure (BP).
    2) BP generally results from vessel/vascular changes
    3) Vessel/vascular changes are caused/affected by hormones
    4) BP is related to Heart rate - ctrl by tensions in muscle
    5) Calcium from the Endoplasmic Reticulum are signals that can affect the heart rate
    6) Signals like Calcium require Receptors for the signals to transfer. Therefore, receptors are required to affect the heart rate, among other functions.
    7) Other signals such as Kinases from Phosphorylation pathways activate protein synthesis
    8) Protein synthesis of DNA occurs in the Nucleus, where transcription factors are affected by Kinases. When certain genes bind, the order is mostly randomized.
    9) At the completion of Protein Synthesis, a biological response follows.

    So from this order of what we're looking for to how it it is caused, we can see that if we want to increase or decrease BP, the drug used will have to go through this general path that starts at 9) and proceeds toward 1). Generally speaking, we are looking for a pharmacological response in terms of biochemical, molecular, physiological, and/or behavioral responses. These 4 types of interactions define the mechanism.

    How does this compare to Pharmacokinetics?

    ===
    Pharmacokinetics:
    =============================
    Pharmacokinetics focuses on:
    1) The chemistry of the drug + its solubility properties
    2) Where the drug goes
    3) How long it stays in the body

    With that said, let's look at DOSE.
    Q: Why is dose so important?
    A: All drugs are toxic.

    Q: How do we know how much dose to give to a person of a certain weight/mass/height/etc...?
    A: Run clinical trials to test dose.

    1) measure how long a drug stays in the system. We can assume that we know the purpose of the drug and how it's suppose to interact through animal testing. We measure the duration of the drug's existence in the blood by taking periodic blood samples over some time and measure the concentration of the drug in the blood.

    Example:
    Dose <--- Clinical Trials ---> Dose ---> Response ---> 10 min ---> How much [drug] left?
    If 90% of the dose is still in the blood after 10 minutes, we can hypothesize that the drug is binded to a protein, or the drug is hydrophilic. It also lets us estimate how much of a dose must be given to last a set amount of time in the blood.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    That's pretty much it for today's lecture. But before that, some facts given in class:
    Toxins are different from toxicants. Toxins are composed of proteins, not chemicals. An example may be snake venom. On the other hand, toxicants are chemical-based and an example is smog.

    Drug therapy and toxicity have no difference. A toxicalogical response is just a pharmacological response where you're getting ill.

    That's the end of Lecture 1.
  • Test Diet, Religion, Dance, Organic foods. (no particular order)

    So like the title says, the topic tonight will be about my take on religion, a new diet I'm trying out, organic foods, and me dancing.

    ===
    Religion
    ==========
    My sister made a decision to become baptized under Christianity. I'll support her decision and attend her baptism since it's important to her. I don't know how my parents would react though. We're Chinese Buddhists (yes, there is a bit of a difference of how Buddhism is followed, which I'm not going to elaborate here). They've experienced some things that they said made them wary of Christianity. I wouldn't know exactly what they were, but I myself have had a bad first impression about it along with Catholicism when I was young. I may have been young, but it's still enough to affect me. Long story short, people tried advertising their respective religion to me, offering sanctuary from sins and hell if I decide to follow, and implying suffering if I don't. I made the point I'm Buddhist and happy with my choice. Now, I wouldn't have a bad impression if those guys just said "okay" and left, but man they were persistent and kept on going. And you know what? This wasn't just once, but several times as well. It doesn't make Christianity or Catholicism bad or anything, just that their persistence made it annoying.

    Now, I don't hate Christianity or Catholicism. A lot of my friends follow them. And I am friends with them because they respect my way of life, and I appreciate that. What you believe in is your business. If it hurts others, then that's a problem in my opinion. If you try to push your religion onto me, or argue that your way is the "right" way for me, you're making yourself into a bad representative of your religion in my eyes. And naturally, a bad representative implies a bad company/group/organization/club/religion/etc...

    My friends showed me that Christianity and Catholicism isn't all about what those advertisers made it out to be. This was in my first and second year of college. Since then, my aversion to those religions lessened, and I really don't have any complaints about it. Rather, to me it's just there and some people follow it while others follow something else.

    Looks like I digressed. In any case, I believe my sister is following her decisions with the right reasons and so I will stand behind her decision and support her.

    ===
    Organic Foods
    ==============
    So... we all hear about how organic food is the way nature intended it to be. Well, that's true ~ grown without any chemical sprays and unnatural fertilizers like sewage sludge, pesticides, and so on. The thing about organic foods are that they pack much more nutrients than their commercial man-made counterparts. An analogy would be comparing those huge 50 cent coins about 3 centimeters in diameter to those Sacajawea $1 coins. Organic = Sacajawea, whereas commercial grown = 50 cent coins. What this means is that although organic foods tend to come in smaller sizes, they hold much more nutrients that you're body needs compared to non-organic grown foods. Naturally, this would technically mean you could eat less and still gain all the valuable nutrients.

    The downfall of course is price. You pay more for a smaller size, and for something you won't consciously feel the positive effects of. Naturally, these days we want fast results or else we give up on an advertised item. The thing is, organic food follows your body's speed to process what you eat, and so you won't feel much. But you can think of it this way: the price would match the quality. Other than that, it's really your decision.

    ===
    Test Diet
    ===========
    So my test diet is simple. It consists of organic veggies like broccoli, cucumber, asparagus, baby carrots, and this yellow cucumber i don't remember the name of. All I'll be eating for the whole week is steamed veggies. I'll flavor it with some salt. Hopefully my body will be able to hold up.

    So why am I following such a simple diet? Well for one thing I want to lose weight. Yes, I'm fat, I just hide it well. Also, it's for my health. I've been eating too much meat lately. And I like steamed veggies, especially when they're very soft that they just basically "melt" in my mouth. I'll probably grow sick of it by tomorrow night, but at least when I'm done, I'll appreciate every other type of food.

    ===
    Dance
    ========
    I'm planning on signing up for beginner's dance on Sunday around noon. I recently started to like dancing and am thinking that it'd be a good way to be active. I've already broken down the general dance steps for Gara Gara Go by Big Bang. Still working on their dance break though. And I've gotten down the part I like the most in G-Dragon's A Boy. So I essentially know how the moves are suppose to go. The problem is making it look good.

    Well, that's it for tonight. I've been writing with a sleepy mind so I'm sure something I said may carry a different meaning than from what I intended. If that's the case, I apologize.

  • Exciting Saturday

    Saturday, March 27, 2010.

    Today was quite enjoyable. There was a science expo at a baseball stadium in San Diego where I volunteered to help host a booth teaching anyone about pharmacy via a hands-on and analogical experience. What do I mean? Well, the kids made their own "patients" by using markers to draw on tangerines. They then take vitamin C tablets and crushed them into a fine powder via mortar and pestle.

    Afterwards, the powder was transfered to a solution bottle and mixed with water. The kids then took a syringe (don't worry, the needle was not sharp at all and quite large), filled it with about 3ml of the solution and injected it into their "patient" and immediately bandaged it.

    It was quite fun just to watch them go through the process. It was even funnier if the injected solution burst back out of the punctured tangerine skin, mostly because the kids would then be surprised.

    There were two other games as well: Knock down empty medicine bottles with jelly beans (a take on the carnival classic), and tossing the jelly beans into the bottle (another take on the goldfish ping-pong ball game). There were some hilarious moments involving my friends too, especially the little water-gun duel using the needle-less syringes filled with water.

    Well, I can't really remember much at the moment, mostly because I'm falling asleep, so moving on to the hangout held over at Katherine's place:
    That was awesome. Although I couldn't eat anything because I finished a whole large pizza about an hour or two before, it was fun listening and talking to everyone. We played Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band on the Wii. Those were amusing, but even more so with everyone to play with. Sadly though, I started getting sleepy and worn-out. We played three games of Mafia. The first time, I was a civilian. The second time, I was a mafia. The third time, I was a civilian again, only I got the exact same card that indicated so in the first game. Quite a coincidence. In any case, I died all three times. I'm not sure what to say when everyone nominates me to lose. Oh well, it was great hanging out with everyone, even though my face probably didn't look like it :P

    Hoping to hang out with them again. Anyway, it's now 1:37 am of Sunday. Later today, I need to start studying the chapters for biochem before the first lecture. Nite time.

About Me

  • When you look at everything in life in several perspectives, you see that there's more to life than what meets the eye. you become more open minded and will see that there are more ways to achieve the same goal... Of course, that is only IF you accept those perspectives. . life is a one-chance opportunity; take it or leave it. fate does not control your life, you control it. all that comes after is the result of your decision. . .don't dwell in the past, but don't forget it.
